SQL Server Authentication

Set-Up
I have an n-tier application, security is implemented in the business layer not in the database. So it is a pretty neat design :-)

I use integrated authentication to make sure we can audit database access and use triggers to store information about who last updated a certain record - this also helps debugging in Profiler, because you can track all sessions back to the user.

The technical set-up is two servers, one running IIS 6.0 and one running SQL Server 2000/2005 (I have the choice).

Problem
Since users are allowed to connect to the database and have access to all tables, they could circumvent security by connecting to the database directly, e. g. using MS Access, Excel, etc. As all security is in the application, this would give them full access to all information.

Potential Solutions
Put security into the database
Does not work for me for three reasons:

• the complex security model we have, if we could implement it on the database level, would impact performance considerably
• maintenance of security in the database is very hard, by putting it into the application we can use AzMan (Authorization Manager) to administer security, so it does not require a programmer to do this.
• I like clean design, and security just belongs into the business logic layer

Shutdown SQL Server network services and connect to the database using shared memory instead
This would work, but it requires IIS and SQL Server to run on the same machine, and my experience was that this slows down the machine considerably. Also, for administration, DBAs and programmers would always need to log on to the server itself, they could not use Enterprise Manager running on their own machines.

Use a dedicated application account and dump integrated authentication
This would prevent us from auditing and other things that I described above and which I value too high, I cannot dump this.

This proposal was then detailed further by the person who had suggested it, the application should call a stored procedure to tell the database who the user is.

I still did not find this solution convincing; a bug in the application could break the tracking mechanism, auditing and using Profiler would still not be possible.

Final Solution
I knew that Oracle uses something called "Proxy Authentication", which connects to the database with an application-specific account. Once connected it will run in the user's context, so the user name is known in the database.

So I was looking for something similar in SQL Server, and finally found that it does exist: you can create application roles in a database (not on the server level, but that's OK), these roles are protected by a password. Access to tables is not granted to users, but to the application role only. Users are only granted connect rights.

The application will connect to the database using integrated authentication, and before accessing any tables it will need to call sp_setapprole and pass the name and password of the application role.

After activating the application role, the variable USER will contain the role name, while SYSTEM_USER will still contain the real user's name.
Now users could potentially still connect to the database but would not see any information.

Implementation of this is extremely easy, just call sp_setapprole when you open the connection, which, if you designed your application well, is in a single place.

I am now even considering to grant connect rights to all Domain Users, so security can be controlled in a single place via AzMan.

German Tax Income

The German government have learned that this year's tax intake will be more than expected, there will be an additional 23 bn Euro. So far the good news.

The bad news is that now everyone seems to be arguing where to spend this money. But wait a second! Let me make a more down-to-earth example:

If my salary was 2.200 Euro and I had a debt to my bank amounting to 150.000 Euro, and all of a sudden I get an unexpected gratification from my boss amounting to another 2.200 Euro, what do you think I should do with this money? What would my bank manager tell me to do with it?

Now if you multiply the numbers in my example by 10 bn, you have exactly what the German government numbers are. So why do they argue at all?

Skoda Car Dealer

Recently we had gone to a Skoda car dealer to test drive and bargain a bit. This is our experience.

At the first dealership we visited, we were greeted very professionally by the owner, and when we asked for the model we wanted to test drive the answer was: sorry, but we don't have exactly this car available, can we give you another with a weaker engine? Well, we weren't exactly delighted, but accepted.

Then we were handed over to some assistant. All of a sudden the car was available, but was a used one. Well, who cares for a test drive. So they unloaded the vehicle - apparently the owner had been using it for grocery shopping - so why exactly did not he offer us this car? So we took the test drive with this car and were pretty excited with it.

Back at the dealership (and the assistant) we asked to speak with the owner, but the assistant assured us that he could handle this. OK. So we asked for the list price of a new car with some extras and the colour that we had chosen. The offer that we got was this: the used car we had just tested, which was neither new nor was it the colour we wanted, not did it have the extras we had asked for. They guy though that he was showing deep consideration when he offered to add some of the extras at his own cost (wow!), but we would not be able to get all of them. I told him that I had got to leave now, and he insisted on printing this awkward offer and hand it over.

The next day he even had the guts to call my home, when I told him that if this is what he called an "offer" he didn't have to call. And he did not any more.

But we still wanted this car so we went to three other dealerships, in one I was not served even after having waited (with my unpatient child) for half an hour. The other two were OK, we played bargain with both of them until we got a 10% reduction on the list price, which is not a lot, and boy did we have to bargain for this little!

At this final rate, the new car, with the colour we had chosen and all the extras we had asked for, was cheaper than the original offer of the used car, in a different colour and missing most of the extras we had gotten at the first dealership!

So we were quite satisfied until we had some repairs. Even though they were on warranty, they tried to make us pay for the rental car, which I downright refused. We had chosen a garager further away from home, because this is were we had finally bought the car, so we wanted them to have the additional income from all inspections. But this way - no way! We switched to a closer garage and do not need a rental car now if we have our car inspected.

My bottom line: despite the high quality and comfort of Skoda cars, the service attitude is lacking so much that this definitely was my first and my last car of this make.

Internet Banking Security

I had "lost" my TANs and Phone Banking PIN - well, "lost" is not the right word, my children had acted as a shredder.

I do not use Phone Banking at all, so I called in asking for a new TAN list only. I was told that they would not mail me a TAN list, because they could not identify me without a Phone PIN.

So I inquired how to get a Phone PIN, which is easy enough: they can mail it to me!

So now I wonder, why mailing a PIN is so much more secure than mailing TANs? Any clues?

Anyway, with banks you have to play by their rules and so I did: I got the Phone PIN, rang them again, now having "proper" identification, asked for a TAN list, got it mailed, rang them again to activate it, and finally I can use Internet Banking again, the only downer being the phone charges I had incurred.

Justice for Everyone - for real!

Wouldn't you like justice for everyone? Well, it exists!

Most goods/gifts are not spread equally, and even if they were, people would probably still complain about not having got their fair share. Just think about money: ever met that rich guy who was satisfied with his earnings? Probably not, and even more likely he wouldn't be as rich if he thought otherwise.

Well, there is one gift, which everyone got their fair share of; although it is not distributed equally, everyone agrees to have got enough of it. This gift is "intelligence".

P.S.: The total amount of intelligence on our planet is a constant, the population keeps growing. (I can't recall where I read this, but I like it! If the author wants to be named, just drop me an email.)

Mountain Biking in Austria

In short: just don't do it.

A little longer:
I presented myself with a free day (no work, no family) for my birthday, and wanted to go mountain biking. The famous "Moser Guide" had a tour to my liking, it started right at the border between Germany and Austria.
I set off into a beautiful valley, waterfalls all around, steep stone walls, paradise if you like. Then after 30 minutes of climbing I came across a forest ranger, who told me that riding this path, which he used with his car, was not open to the public. This could clearly be seen from a sign at the beginning of the path. After some arguments I turned around and followed his advice to an "open" tour.
The first thing I notices was that the same road sign indicated that the "open tour" was not open to the public, but what the heck. I met another forest ranger on this path (well, you better call this a road, it was almost paved!) who greeted me - so this tour was open after all, despite the sign.
The tour, however, was most unscenic, and soon after the start I was lost due the absence of sign posts. I had not planned to take this tour in the beginning, so I had no maps of this area either. And, I learned later, forest paths are only open to the public if sign posts tell you so - now what are you supposed to do if they suddenly end?
After climbing a mountain (the "Juifen") just for the excercise (as I said, this road was pretty unscenic, not even birds could be heard, it was just dull) then went back to my car and I swear I will never try mountain biking in Austria again!
Why should I, after all: in Bavaria all forest paths are open to the public, and there are lovely tours around. So my next special treat for myself will be a tour in Bavaria again. It's much close anyway :-)
As for the Moser MTB Guide: if you read about tours in Austria in this book, don't take it for grated that they are legal!

Chewing Nails, Picking Noses

Yuck!

During my travels on trains and underground I often experience this disgusting sight: people picking their noses and chewing away in their nails.

It helps if you look at them, make them feel watched. This works quite well in most, but I had some people who tried to hide - no kidding! - behind another seat and continue there. Also, having to look at them so stringly could not be advisable after a hearty breakfast ...

Other strategies I have so far only thought about but never employed are:

• offer them a pair of scissors for their nails/tissue for their nose/pacifier to stop chewing
  
• ask them whether they found what they were looking for in their nose (kindergarden-level)
• ask them if you may chew their nails to see whether they taste better than your own
• start chewing your toe-nails (well, I am too old to try this myself)

Any other ideas that might actually work, when just looking and watching does not?

USB 2.0 Issues on IBM T40

There are many posts out there about USB 2.0 not working on IBM laptops. I did not find this particular issue anywhere, so here we go:

When I connected my USB 2.0 harddrive to my T40 it would always complain about a 2.0 device being connected to a 1.1 port. From then on all USB 2.0 devices would work like 1.1 (even my good ol' memory stick). I was able to re-establish 2.0 connectivity (for my memory stick, that is) by either

• removing all USB ports in Device Manager, then scan for hardware changes, or
• as so often with Windows, rebooting my computer

But as soon as I would connect my harddrive, the laptop ports were degraded again.

Finally I found the reason: apparently the harddrive, although being a 2.5" laptop drive, sucked up too much power. When I connected the harddrive to an external power supply, the ports would work fine in 2.0 mode. (I was lucky enough not to have damaged my mainboard, as some people had reported elsewhere)

Hope this may help some people facing the same issue.

P.S.: I am not saying this is the only possible reason for this behaviour, as the many forums on the internet show plenty of other causes. So if this does not solve your issue, do check the forums too!

GMX on FritzBox

I got a GMX VoIP account yesterday (1c per minute for all calls in Germany, or 10 EUR flat, excludes mobiles of course) and set up my FritzBox to use it. All I got was a message code 401 and the FritzBox would not be able to connect.

It took me a while to find out why: I had chosen a password with more than 8 characters, which is not checked by the setup page in GMX. They do have a message there saying that the password must have 6-8 characters, but it was easy to overlook.

Once I had changed my password to fit the limits it worked like a charm. Also the FAQ on GMX is pretty helpful for setting things up. Mind you, this particular problem was not on their list. Hope this may help some people out there.

Single Instance Application, Passing Command Line Arguments

Problem

I wanted to make sure that only one instance of a program is running on my machine, and when a second instance would be started, it would pass its command line arguments to the original instance, then terminate. Thus the original instance can handle everything else, such as opening a file, bringing itself to the foreground, etc. Also, the solution should not employ outdated techniques such as DDE, and should not use any unmanaged code, as I had seen in so many other solutions to this problem.

Solution

Part 1: Many solutions I have seen walk through the process list in order to identify a previous instance. Others use Mutex, which I found appealing as it is a lot faster, and completely managed code. This solution uses the full path of the executing assembly as the Mutex name, so it is definitely unique.

Part 2: Other solutions use DDE to communicate with the previous instance, I chose .NET remoting because again it is fully managed code and not a Windows legacy, and it also works with console applications, while DDE would require a window.

The whole functionality is encapsulated in a class, is written in C# using .NET 2.0. To make this work with .NET 1.1 you would have to change some namespaces, otherwise it is fully compatible.

To demonstrate the principle, I created a simple console application. Of course you'd need to enhance the class a little for general use, this example has for instance a fixed port number, and certainly other flaws for generic usage. But it should only demonstrate the principle.

Beautiful Women Before 8am

Usually I travel by underground shortly after 8am, however, this week I had some early appointments and thus had to travel around 7am. And I notices a big difference: it seems that before 8am there is not a single beautiful women on any of these trains. Not that I really need to see one, but it was really striking!

I have the following possible exaplanations:

1. before 8am I am not able to recognize beauty (I would rather rule this out, but it's possible)
2. travelling before 8am has a negative effect on womens' beauty
3. beautiful women do not have to travel before 8am
4. women only become beautiful after 8am (I don't think so, I have seen my wife early in the morning and she did look beautiful - this would also rule out number 1)

Any more explanations?

Man, I'm just glad that I will be back to my usual schedule next week, it's just a good start into the day to see beauty.

Weather and Students Cavorting

It's June already and we have turned on the heating again, I even got my winter jacked back out from our store room! At first sight you might think this is extraordinary, unprecedented and due to the global warming (shudder!).

But no, I found an article about a student researching the local weather where I live and in 1962 there had even been snow in July and August!

The last sentence of this article is quite notable: "Ich denke es ist erschreckend, dass sich die globale Erwärmung auch schon in einer kleinen Stadt wie Landsberg so bemerkbar macht." (I think it is terrifying that the global warming affects even small towns such as Landsberg).

What I find remarkable in this sentence are two things:

1. after having made a point that extreme temparatures have always been there, the autor falls back to the global warming track (rem.: I do not doubt this, but the article went into a different direction before)
2. when talking about "global", why should small towns be an exception? What kind of student wrote this anyway?

A Cab Driver in Düsseldorf

The manners were professional, although I was surprised that he had to use a navigation system to find a nearby hotel, which was not even a small one.

The he complained when his navigation system sent him all around a roundabout and back the way we had come. He told us that the system needed a service it was constantly giving wrong directions. It took me 5 monre minutes to find out why: when the system said "turn right" he started thinking "does this mean right here, or the next one?" and almost always took the wrong turn, although the system had incicated the right one! I guess the driver needed a service too :-)

Eventually we managed to get to the hotel, having driven 25km instaed of 15km. A professional that he was, he only changed us for the 15km, so it had only cost us time - so far!

When we got into the hotel we asked for our rooms in our names and to our suprise there were no reservations! Also in the name of our company: none! I asked for the name of the hotel - we had arrived at the wrong one!

So we had to get another cab to get us to the right one, which now not only cost us more time but also money.

We were so happy to arrive safely in the end!

Create your own ring tones for your mobile phone

This works great with my Siemens phone, but should work will all phones that support .mmf sound files. Now you can have virtually any sound as your ring tone.

1. create a sound file in .wav format on your computer (download, record using the freeware tool No23 Recorder, convert from mp3, ...)
2. convert .wav to .mmf using this tool
   
3. move the .mmf file onto your phone, I used the Siemens Data Suite, I would guess that every manufacturer gives you a similar tool
4. choose new ring tone, done

I personally recorded my son saying "Dad, your phone is ringing!". I find that spoken ring tones catch my attention much better than music, which is around everywhere.

Can you hear where that ambulance is coming from?

Because humans have ears on each side of their head, they are able to localize most sounds. The direction of high-frequency sounds is pinpointed based on their volume level in each ear, and low frequency sounds based on their arrival time in each ear.

But Guy Moore, an assistant professor of physics at McGill University in Montreal, said human ears do not do a good job finding the source of sounds around 1,000 hertz using either method, so that a noise in that range seems just as likely to be coming from the television to the right as a purse sitting to the left.

"That's also why it's so hard to tell where an ambulance siren is coming from in traffic," Mr. Moore said.

I may be time for some people to think about the frequency our sirens use. After all it might make a big difference if you could tell, where the sound is coming from!

Fitness Sells

In the eighties is was "sex sells", but people have become blunted, so nowawdays you would probably show something that is rated as porn to create an (illegal) eye-catcher. And even then this would probably not raise your sales by a single point.

At the same time, people have also grown more egocentric, wanting to show off. A good way to show off is to display ones fitness. So you could say that today the new motto is "fitness sells". And by that I do not mean that sports gear sells any better than it did in those days! What sells is some pacard that you can pin onto yourself to show how hale and hearty you are.

For example: cars used to sell through half-naked women standing in front of them, not at the local car dealer - alas! - but in advertisements and car shows. Now what sells are cars that give you a sporty image: sports cars and SUVs that burn a lot of fuel, offer not enough room, are uncomfortable, etc. But don't you just love them!

Or look at those walkers, nowadays they can show others that they are in great shape by displaying nordic walking sticks. Most of them do not even know how to use these tools, I have seen some bad postures about some of those walkers, they will probably not experience the inteded profit of those sticks but end up with a problem with their spinal discs!

So if you have a product you want to sell, just look at how you can make the would-be-buyer think that it shows others that he/she is in great shape. It is not necessary that your product creates that good shape, nor is it necessary that the buyer is in good shape (just look at those guys driving sports cars).

Linux under Windows

Recently I wanted to run some Linux software on my PC and was wonder how to do this without having to boot a different OS, i. e. leaving Windows.

I came across Cygwin, which does not do the trick, it is only a port of useful Unix tools to Windows. Anyway, for those who like the standard Unix commands and like working in a shell, this is great!

Next, I installed CoLinux, which is basically a virtual machine, which can run any bootable image. It works fine, speed is great, you can even run XWindows and connect to it via VNC! There are, alas, some limitations like having no access to sound, bluetooth, etc. Whatever hardware is locked by Windows is not available to an OS running under CoLinux.

So what about using a Windows program instead. VMWare Player did it for me, now I have Ubuntu running in a separate window and can easily work with Windows and Linux at the same time. I still have to figure out how to make my (Windows) harddrive available to Ubuntu, but it worked for my CD-ROM, so I am sure there is a way.

So now I have the best of both worlds combined :-)

Restaurant Halali in München - lieber nicht!

Es handelt sich hierbei um ein "Edel-Lokal", sprich: recht hohe Preise und eine moderne Küche.

Ich war dort mit drei Geschäftspartnern direkt nach der Arbeit, also nicht undbeding im Abenddress, aber auch nicht schlecht gekleidet. Dennoch konnte ich mich des Gefühls nicht erwehren, daß wir zuvorkommender behandelt worden wären, hätten wir uns in einen Smoking oder ähnliches geschmissen. In wirklich guten Lokalen hatte ich mich selbst in Jeans nicht so als "Außenseiter" gefühlt, aber zu dieser Kategorie gehört das Halali offensichtlich nicht.

Die Bedienung war zunächst freundlich, doch das änderte sich schon bald: ich hatte drei (und definitiv nicht vier!) Aperitivs bestellt, als dann vier kamen hatten wir schon den ersten Ärger: der Kellner behauptete ich hätte vier bestellt und was er denn mit dem übrigen jetzt machen solle. Ist das mein Problem?

Das Essen war sehr ambitioniert, und durchaus überdurschnittlich. Wenn man allerdings das Preis-Leistung-Verhältnis anschaut, kommt das Halali über den Durschnitt nicht hinaus.

Mit dem Wein brachte der Kellner auch vier Gläse und ich erklärte, daß ich keinen Alkohol trinke. Das brachte mit einen Spruch wie "Wein ist doch kein Alkohol, sondern ein Lebenselixier" ein. Also muß man sich jetzt schon dafür rechtfertigen?

Zu guter Letzt sprach mich der Kellner noch auf eine weitere vorliegende Reservierung an, die ich für die folgende Woche hatte: ich wollte mit acht Projektpartnern hier essen. Er sagte mir, daß das Restaurant an diesem Tag schon sehr voll sei, und ich solle bitte frühzeitig Bescheid geben, sollten nicht alle acht Personen kommen können. Nun, das gebietet eigentlich der gesunde Menschenverstand, warum also dieser Hinweis? Für mich waren die Erfahrungen bis hier plus diese Hinweis dann Ausschlag genug, um die Reservierung sofort zu stornieren.

Fazit: 250 Euro für vier Personen, und die Erfahrung, daß ich dieses Lokal sicher nicht mehr aufsuchen werde.

Online Video Recorder

Kürzlich habe ich auf spiegel.de von einem kostenlosen Online TV Recorder gehört, das mußte ich natürlich gleich ausprobieren!

Ich habe mir sowohl die kostenlose wie auch zwei kommerzielle Versionen angeschaut.

Kostenlos: OnlineTVrecorder (OTR)
Die Bedienung ist super-einfach, man kann Aufnahmen manuell programmieren oder aus dem online-Fenrsehprogramm auswählen. Regelmäßige Sendungen kann man auf die "Wishlist" setzen, diese werden dann immer aufgenommen.

Leider gibt es Fehler in der Programmzeitschrift, die auch nur den Titel der Sendungen und keine Kurzbeschreibungen enthält.

Download: es gibt Traffic-Limit (bei einem kostenlosen Service ganz normal), die man mittels Zahlung per PayPal umgehen kann. Außerdem sind Download in der Happy Hour (01:00-06:00) unlimitiert, wer einen Downloadmanager nutzt, dem kommt dies sehr entgegen.

Nach dem Download muß man die Datei decodieren, um die Rechtslage zu sichern. Denn man darf die Aufnahme nur anschauen, wenn man sie selbst in Auftrag gegeben hat - sonst wird dies zur illegalen Verbreitung von Filmen. Das Decodieren geht mittels Tool ganz gut, nur abbrechen darf man es nicht, da das System nur eine einmalige Decodierung zuläßt. Wenn also dabei ein Fehler auftritt, dann ist die Aufnahme futsch!

Qualität: naja, auf dem Laptop ist es ganz OK, für den Fenseher sicher ungeeignet. Informationssendungen schaue ich damit gerne, Filme sollte man besser auf DVD ausleihen. Das Format ist 384x288. Geplant ist, das Format demnächst zu verbessern.

Zuverlässigkeit: Ich habe ungefähr 10% "Ausschluß", d. h. jede zehnte Aufnahme gelingt aus technischen Gründen nicht, was in einem sog. "Bad File" resultiert. Angeblich sollen diese innerhalb von 72 Stunden repariert werden, dies war jedoch bei mir nicht der Fall.

Kostenpflichtig: Shift TV und Save TV
Preis: zwischen 5 Euro pro Monat (bei Save TV und 12 Monaten Laufzeit) und 10 Euro pro Monat (3 Monate LAufzeit bei Shift TV).

Bedienung: so einfach wie OTR, die Online-Programmzeitschrift ist allerdings deutlich besser und enthält auch Beschreibungen der Programme, während OTR nur den Titel der Sendung enthält.

Die Anzahl der gleichzeitigen Aufnahmen sind im Gegensatz zu OTR begrenzt (Shift TV: 3).

Mein Persönliches Fazit
Der kostenlose OTR bietet eigentlich alles, was ich brauche! Für den guten Dienst bin ich auch gerne bereit, einmal etwas zu spenden.

Toleranz und Nächstenliebe

Das sind hohe Werte der Kirche. Auch in der katholischen. Auch in Bayern. Auch in Rottach-Egern? Man könnte das bezweifeln, denn: als ein Busunternehmer ebendort aus der Kirche austrat, versagte ihm der Pfarrer nicht nur die Aufträge für Gemeindefahrten, sondern versuchte auch, die örtlichen Vereine dahingehen zu beeinflussen! Ein Verein fuhr trotzdem mit dem Unternehmer und darf seitdem die Gemeinderäume nicht mehr für seine Treffen nutzen.

Und das Beste: der Pfarrer hielt es noch nicht einmal für nötig, das "verlorene Schaf" anzurufen und zu fragen, was ihn denn zum Austritt bewogen hatte.

Der Busunternehmer wandte sich an den zuständigen Bischof, doch von dort kam bisher nur Schweigen.

Freitag abend im Zugversuchte mein Gegenüber eine neben ihm sitzende Frau für sich einzunehmen:

"Das jetzt ist der schönste Teil vom Wochenende!"
"Warum das denn?" (ich nehme an, sie erwartete nun eine Schmeichelei, aber weit gefehlt!)
"Nicht mehr im Büro, und noch nicht zu Hause!"

Die junge Dame widmete sich daraufhin wieder ihrem Buch.

Die 40-Stunden-Woche

Ich weiß nicht, warum sich alle so beklagen, also ich fände es toll, wenn unsere Regierung es schaffen würde, die 40-Stunden-Woche einzuführen. Da könnte ich gleich gute 20% weniger arbeiten!

Denn trotz meines 40-Stunden-Vertrages, der Überstunden im Gehalt mit einschließt, wurde mir gesagt, daß man durchaus 50 Stunden für normal halte. Aus Unternehmenssicht sicher verständlich: die 10 Überstunden bekommt man nämlich ganz umsonst.

Wenn man weiterdenkt ist das allerdings nicht so, denn 40 Stunden eines ausgeruhten Arbeiters sind oft am Ende viel ertragreicher für das Unternehmen, als 50 Stunden eines überarbeiteten, ausgelaugten Mitarbeiters. Aber Langfrist-Strategien scheinen Unternehmen zumindest im Personalbereich derzeit nicht anzustreben.

Ähnliches kann man bei der "Gewinnoptimierung" durch Entlassungen beobachten: kurzfristig wird der große Kuchen durch weniger Mitarbeiter geteilt, so daß jeder (Manager) größere Stücke erhält. Daß man später den Kuchen verkleinern muß, weil nicht mehr genügend "Bäcker" da sind, wird erstmal nicht bedacht.

So, jetzt bin ich aber genug abgescheift, zurück zum Wesentlichen: liebe Politiker, von mir bekommt Ihr ein klares "Ja" zur 40-Stunden-Woche. Ich fürchte nur, daß ich darunter etwas anderes verstehe als ihr, gelle? Bei mir heißt das nicht mehr als 40, bei Euch nicht weniger als 40 ...

Intelligenzia in der Bahn

Heute morgen durfte ich es genießen, inmitten einer Gruppe zu sitzen, die sich kreuz und quer unterhielten, so daß ich meine Arbeit unterbrechen und zwangsläufig zuhören mußte. Hier ein paar kurze Notizen dieser der Aufzeichnung eigentlich unwürdigen Unterhaltung:

"Da gibt's doch so einen Komiker [...]"
"Didi Hallervorden?"
"Nee, der nicht, aber so ähnlich"
...
Nach einigem Hin und Her stellte sich heraus, daß er Stefan Raab meinte. Wenn es irgendwie geht, liegt der sogar noch unter Didis Niveau :-)

"Genau der! Der war kürzlich in in ... äh ... so einem bekannten Schweizer Skibebiet. Wie heißt das denn?"
"Zürs?" (klingt ja so ähnlich wie Zürich, muß also in der Schweiz liegen!)
"Nee, anders ..."
"Zermatt?" (Aha! Jetzt kommen wir der Sache näher)
"Nee, das war's auch nicht. Jedenfalls gab's da so eine super-teure Whiskey-Bar ..."
"Ach ja, dann war es Kitzbühel!" (Assoziationen gibt's - also ich hätte das nicht gewußt)
"Genau!" (ist zwar jetzt nicht wirklich Schweiz, aber Hauptsache der Punkt ist endlich geklärt)
"Da gab es Whiskey für mehrere Hundert Euro die Flasche, und Raabs Kumpel ist eine runtergefallen. Da hat er sich doch glatt unter den Tisch gekniet und aufgeleckt, was ging."
Gelächter.

An diesem Punkt stopfte ich mir meinen MP3-Player in die Ohren (nur die Kopfhörer), drehte so weit auf, daß die "Hintergrundgeräusche" verstummten, und widmete mich wieder meiner Arbeit.

Fitness-Studio - nein danke!

Gestern abend habe ich ein Probetraining in einem Fitneß-Studio absolviert. Die Erfahrungen waren gemischt ...

Der Termin
Ich hatte das Training telefonisch eine Woche vorher vereinbart, dennoch war zunächst mal kein Trainer verfügbar. Dann kam jemand und sagte mir, daß er erst noch einen Kurs geben müsse, und ob ich die 20 Minuten nicht einfach mitmachen wolle. Klar, bevor ich hier dumm rumsitze ;-)

Der Kurs
Der Kurs war gut, der Trainer trotz der vielen Teilnehmer (manche lagen zwischen den Maschinen herum) sehr aufmerksam und gut beim Korrigieren.

Verfügbarkeit
Danach bekam ich eine Einweisung in Gewichte und Maschinen. Auf meine Frage, ob denn immer jemand für Fragen zur Verfügung stehe, erhielt ich ein klares "Ja". Fünf Minuten später fragte jemand "meinen" Trainer, ob er kurz Zeit habe. Nein, leider habe er keine Zeit, und ein anderer Trainer sei leider derzeit auch nicht verfügbar. So viel zum Thema "guter Vertriebler".

Ziemlich voll, aber sauber
Kurz haben wir noch beim "Spinning", das dort edlerweise "Xycling" heißt, vorbeigeschaut: alle Räder waren besetzt.

Die Dusche war für den Andrang ganz ordentlich sauber, es gab Seife und Shampoo, und Handtücher sind inklusive. Die Sauna habe ich nicht ausprobiert, das gehört nicht zu meinem Fokus.

Auf meine Frage, ob immer so viel los sei, bekam ich zu hören, daß es Montag und Dienstag abend immer besonders voll sei. Warum man mir dann für das Probetraining nicht einen weniger vollen Tag vorgeschlagen hat, habe ich nur still mich selbst gefragt. Vielleicht doch kein so guter Vertrieb?

Der Vertrag
Zu guter letzt wollte ich doch tatsächlich trotzdem einen Vertrag abschließen, allerdings nur für drei Monate, denn ich trainiere doch lieber draußen, wenn die beißende Kälte und meine Fettschichten verschwunden sind. Leider war die Dame (die einzige), die für Verträge zuständig ist, in einem anderen Gespräch. So verließ ich das Studio.

Und nach einer Nacht drüber schlafen, weiß ich heute wirklich nicht, ob ich dafür mehr als 100 Euronen im Monat abdrücken will ...

Aufnahmegebühr
Zur Vertragsgestaltung: in einem früheren Gespräch hatte ich gefragt, ob man für mich als Winter-Gast nicht ein Abkommen treffen könne, so daß ich den günstigeren 12-Monats-Vertrag abschließe und diesen im Sommer einfach ruhen lasse. Nein, das gehe nicht, ich müsse den teuren monatlich kündbaren Vertrag nehmen, aber man erlasse mir die Aufnahmegebühr, da ich ja wiederkommen wolle. Wie nett!
Gestern abend konnte ich ein Gespräch mithören, in dem jemandem die Aufnahmegebür erlassen wurde, mit der Begründung, daß im Februar das Studio umgebaut werde, und daher ein paar (nicht näher bezeichnete) Einschränkungen beim Training vorkommen werden.
Ich würde ja zu gerne mal in einen Trainingsraum hineinrufen: "Wer von Euch hat denn die Aufnahmegebühr bezahlt?" Ich würde wetten, daß sich nicht einer meldet!
Wie auch immer, vom Umbau hat mir keiner erzählt, also noch ein Grund, von einer Anmeldung Abstand zu nehmen.

Übrigens: in eimen anderen, weitaus billigeren Studio, hat man mir ohne weiteres (und von sich aus!) angeboten, daß ich den Vertrag in den Sommermonaten ruhen lassen könne. Sieht so aus, als können sich die großen, teuren Studios es eher leisten, Kunden zu vergraulen. Meine Erwartung war ja bisher, daß ich mehr Leistung erwarte, wenn ich mehr zahle, aber man lernt immer mal wieder etwas dazu :-(

Mein Schweinehund
So bleibe ich doch wieder dabei: abends einfach den inneren Schweinehund überwinden, dann noch die Dunkelheit und die Kälte, und einfach wieder draußen Joggen gehen. Und am Wochenende Radeln oder Langlaufen je nach Schneelage. Kompletter Service bei der Rückkehr (heißer Tee, Dusche, Sauna, und das alles ohne Andrang) inklusive :-)

3 Milliarden Euro sind "übrig"

Der Kölner Stadtanzeiger schreibt hier, daß 3 Milliarden Euro Bundesfördermittel für die Integration von Arbeitslosen nicht abgerufen wurden. Grund dafür seien "organisatorische Schwierigkeiten beim Aufbau neuer Strukturen".

Würde das in der sog. "freien Wirtschaft" geschehen, würden wohl die gesamten Verantwortlichen gefeuert werden, entweder

• weil sie zu raffgierig waren, und die 3 Milliarden selbst einsacken wollten, und gleichzeitig so dumm, sich erwischen zu lassen

oder

• weil sie ihren Job nicht beherrschen.

Da in jedem Fall die Zahl der Arbeitslosen durch eine Entlassung erhöht würde, gehe ich davon aus, daß die Bundesanstalt für Arbeit ihre Mitarbeiter behält.

So bekommen sie wenigstens auch ihr Geld, denn bisher habe ich noch nichts davon gehört, daß die Gehaltszahlungen auf "organisatosichen Gründen" nicht erfolgen konnten.

Iran und die Atomkraft

Die friedliche Nutzung von Atomkraft ist erlaubt. Urananreicherung gehört dazu und wird von vielen Staaten praktiziert. Warum also soll der Iran der Urananreicherung "abschwören"?

Weil die USA vermuten, daß der Iran dieses Material zum Bau einer Atombombe verwenden wird.

Sehen wir mal davon ab, daß es sicher reibungsärmer und billiger wäre, sich diese Materialien einfach von Staaten zu verschaffen, die es bereits haben, wie ist das nun mit "vermuten"? Die USA erlauben sich sogar, "chirurgische Bobmenagriffe" auf einen suveränen Staat anzukündigen, basierend auf einer Vermutung.

Die Unschuldsvermutung gilt mal wieder nur für Amerikaner - und am besten nur für solche, die nicht schwarz sind oder dem Islam nahestehen.

Welche Freiheit verteidigen die USA denn nun genau?

Explosiver Christstollen

Ein kürzlicher Trip in die USA zeigte mal wieder die lustigen Seiten der Sicherheits-Checks. Wenn's nicht so zum Heulen wäre, würde ich ja lachen ;-)

Auf dem Weg in die USA reise ich immer mit "kleinem" Handgepäck, um Verzögerungen durch nicht befördertes Gepäck zu vermeiden. Das erschwert leider manchmal die Sicherheitskontrollen. Was ich üblicherweise dabei habe ist: ein Rucksack mit Jogging-Sachen, eine Tasche für den Computer, und ein Handkoffer für den Rest.

Der Hinflug war noch harmlos ...

Sicherheitskontrolle in München: ich muß meinen Koffer öffnen, vom Christstollen, den ich meinen Kollegen mitbringen möchte, wird eine Sprengstoffprobe genommen. Zum Glück stellt sich heraus, daß der Puderzucker auch wirklich Zucker ist.

Sicherheitskontrolle in Frankfurt: der Christstollen ist OK, aber mein MP3-Player wird nun auf Sprengstoff untersucht. Ist auch in Ordnung. Nur eben lästig.

Der Rückflug war "lustiger" ...

Nach dem Einchecken an einem größeren amerikanischen Flughafen (meine Gepäckstücke wurden als Bordgepäck gekennzeichnet) scheitere ich schon vor dem Sicherheitscheck: diesen darf ich nur mit zwei Gepäckstücken betreten! Da scheint der Sicherheitsdienst zu definieren, wieviel ich an Bord nehmen darf, nicht die Airline. Aber Diskutieren hat eh keinen Zweck, also kommen die Jogging-Sachen in den Koffer (da ist ja Platz, kein Christstollen mehr drin) und der Computer mitsamt Tasche in den nun leeren Rucksack. Mit ein wenig pressen geht der Koffer zu, Bordkarte und Pass werden kontrolliert, und schon ich darf mich in die Schlange an der Security einreihen.

Nach einer längeren Wartezeit ziehen wir die Schuhe aus, legen Schuhe, Gepäck und Mantel auf das Band und laufen durch den Metalldetektor:
Ihre Bordkarte bitte! - Die habe ich doch eben schon gezeigt, außerdem ist die im Mantel in Ihrem Scanner. - Die Bordkarte bitte! - Hallo!!! Die liegt da in Ihrem Scanner! - OK, dann laufen Sie vor und holen Sie, dann vorzeigen! - Danke vielmals!

Die Bordkarte war immer noch gültig, und so zog ich meine Schuhe unbehelligt wieder an. Dabei sehe ich wie ein Rollstuhlfahrer abgefertigt wird: der Fahrer muß durch den Metalldetektor, während der Rollstuhl mit Gepäck ohne weitere ersichtliche Prüfung durch die Absperrung geschoben wird. Das merke ich mit für meinen nächsten Christstollen :-)

Am Gate werden nochmal Bordkarte und Pass geprüft. Sind beide immer noch gültig, schön!

Beim Boardung stehen neben der Flugzeugtür drei Sicherheitsbeamte, die von der Figur her das Zeug zum MP hätten. Sie wollen nochmals den Pass sehen: Sind Sie das? - Ja. - Sieht jung aus! - Ja, man altert eben ... (dabei ließ ich sicherheitshalber aus, daß man durch diese Sicherheitskontrollen locker nochmal zwei Jahre zulegen kann).

So, das war's auch schon. Oder auch nicht! Denn in Frankfurt beim Umsteigen wurde nochmals das Gepäck komplett kontrolliert. Dies aufgrund einer EU-Regelung, die besagt, daß Umsteiger von außer- auf innereuropäische Flüge nochmals komplett überprüft werden müssen.

Mein Tip für's nächstemal: einfach offiziell in Frankfurt einreisen, und dann den "normalen" Weg zum Anschlußflug wählen (ohne Transfer), das geht schneller. Viel schneller! Denn die Kontrollen waren äußerst genau und die Umsteiger zahlreich.

Sitzplatzbesetzer

Jeden Morgen dasselbe Spiel: in meinem Regionalzug: im vordersten Abteil gibt es eine Gruppe von 6 Personen, die sich gegenseitig die Sitzplätze reservieren. Das heißt, man kommt in einen völlig überfüllten Zug, freut sich drei freie Plätze zu sehen und wird gleich darauf angebrüllt, daß diese besetzt sind.

Nur um das klarzustellen: soweit andere Plätze frei sind, akzeptiere ich das gerne!

Meine Nachfrage, ob sie denn für diese Plätze Fahrkarten und vielleicht auch eine Reservierung hätten, wird weiter gebrüllt (ja, leise geht es bei den Personen leider nicht), daß sie erst gestern denselben Streit mit einem anderen gehabt hätten. Hm, daß dann vielleicht sie im Unrecht sind, auf die Idee kommen diese Proleten ja nicht.

Ach ja, "Proleten" sage ich nicht von ungefähr, denn neben der exorbitanten Lautstärke sind diese Leute auch Meister der Fäkalsprache und "unterhalten" damit auch während der Fahrt das gesamte Abteil. So zum Beispiel wenn ein Handy klingelt: "Ha, da weiß wieder einer nicht wie ein Handy funktioniert". Also, der Humor muß sich mir erst erschließen ...

Von der Bahn bekam ich den hilfreichen Hinweis, ich sollen in diesen Fällen den Schaffner verständigen: klar ich laufe den ganzen Zug entlang und suche ihn :-(

Normalerweise würde ich mich einfach hinsetzen und dann mal schauen was sie machen. Aber wer will schon im Zentrum laut schimpfender Individuen sitzen, und das 30 Minuten lang? Also siegt die Frechheit mal wieder und ich stehe im zugigen Zwischenabteil.

Übrigens: inzwischen habe ich mir einen Klappstuhl zugelegt, und wenn man die richtige Wand im Zwischenabteil bekommt, dann ist es sogar warm, denn eine Wand scheint geheizt zu sein. Und so kann ich dann im Zug doch wieder arbeiten, und das sogar ohne Lärmbelästigung.

Rolltreppen-Steher und andere

Für die, die es noch nicht wissen - und davon gibt es wie es aussieht einige: auf Rolltreppen steht man rechts, und man geht links. Zumindest in München.

Bisher sind mir folgende Dinge schon untergekommen:

• Man (nicht notwendigerweise Mann) steht rechts, ich laufe links vorbei. Kommt ein Kommentar angeflogen, ob man (also ich) es so eilig haben muß. Darauf kann ich nur antworten: ich bin nicht in Eile, ich bewege mich nur gerne. Und ich motze doch auch nicht über all die Übergewichtigen, die besser laufen sollten, und trotzdem nur stehen. Naja, das sage ich natürlich nicht, ich gehe einfach weiter, ein bißchen Grinsen muß ich aber doch ...
• Man steht links, ich komme von hinten, frage höflich, ob ich vorbei darf. Man geht zu Seite, allerdings nicht ohne strafenden Blick und Kommentar in etwa wie oben.
• Man geht links (manchmal auch so langsam, daß man von Fortbewegung nicht mehr sprechen kann) und kurz vor dem Ende der Rolltreppe bleibt man stehen. Das ist ein sehr merkwürdiges, aber häufiges Verhalten. Bei älteren Menschen würde ich die Angst vor dem Stolpern ja verstehen, aber dieses Phänomen ersteckt sich über alle Altersschichten.
