Joomla 4: Manual Updates and Backups

Since the upgrade to Joomla 4, updates through the web interface fail for me. The reason is the limited memory of the cheap server (€ 2.00 per month) I am using, which only gives me 64M of RAM. Apparently this is not sufficient since Joomla 4.

So here are the steps you need to take to manually update Joomla 4:

  1. Download the latest Joomla upgrade package from https://downloads.joomla.org/
  2.  Extract the download package on your computer
  3. Using FileZilla, download a backup of the server's Joomla folder
  4. Using Filezilla, upload files with "replace" option to the server's Joomla folder
  5. delete administrator/cache/autoload_psr4.php from the server's Joomla folder
  6. Go to your Joomla back-end and fix database (System - Maintenance - Database)

Do not forget the last two steps!

If you use Akeeba backup, there are no more automatic backups before you update Joomla through its web interface - unless you have the PRO version. This is new since Akeeba Backup 9, which you need to use after having migrated to Joomla 4. The extension BackupOnUpdate does not exist any longer by itself.

So, make sure to always run a manual backup using Akeeba Backup.

With the above descibed manual process, using Akeeba Backup is not strictly necessary any more, because you do a file based backup. I do it anyway for convenience. Downloading the backup created by Akeeba can replace the file based backup, just download the file created by Akeeba. I do both, better safe than sorry 😀
