Terms of Service - do you understand them?

I had probably better ask: do you read them at all?

Or do you just say: well, everyone else accepted them, so they surely must be OK.

If you ever tried reading them, kudos. If you followed through until the end (several hours later, I am sure), you are great. If you even understood them, you are a super hero! Or a lawyer :-)

In 2017, British lawyer Jenny Afia re-wrote the terms and conditions of Instagram, so Children could understand them. That was a great job. I wish someone would  (actually, the companies themselves, and if not them, the government, should) rewrite them in the same way for all other services and keep them updated.

It did not stir much conversation, but I think it should have. INSTAGRAM TERMS: Our Rules if you want to use Instagram

1. You have to be 13 or over.
2. Don’t post anything showing violence, or that might make other people feel scared, or
   any images that contain nudity.
3. Don’t use anybody else’s account without their permission or try to find out their login
   details.
4. Don’t let anyone else use your account.
5. Keep your password secret.
6. Don’t bully anyone or post anything horrible about people.
7. Don’t post other peoples’ private or personal information.
8. Don’t use Instagram to do anything illegal or that we tell you not to.
9. If you want to add a website to your username, make sure you get permission from
   Instagram first.
10. Don’t change anything about our website or applications, upload any type of virus or do
    anything that might interfere with the way Instagram works. Don’t send us ideas on how
    to improve Instagram.
11. Don’t use any type of software or robot to create accounts or access Instagram, and
    don’t send spam or unwanted emails.

13. Don’t do anything that might affect how other people use and enjoy Instagram.

2. Officially you own any original pictures and videos you post, but we are allowed to use
them, and we can let others use them as well, anywhere around the world. Other people

• We can change or end Instagram, or stop you accessing Instagram at any time, for any reason and without letting you know in advance. We can also delete posts and other content randomly, without telling you, for any reason. If we do this, we will not be responsible for paying out any money and you won’t have any right to complain.
• We can force you to give up your username for any reason.
• We can, but do not have to, remove, edit, block and/or monitor anything posted or any

accounts that we think breaks any of these rules. We are not responsible if somebody
breaks the law or breaks these rules; but if you break them, you are responsible. You
should use common sense and your best judgment when using Instagram.

8. Although you do not own your data, we do own ours. You may not copy and paste
Instagram logos or other stuff we create, or remove it or try to change it.

9. You can close your Instagram account by logging into Instagram and completing this
form: https://instagram.com/accounts/remove/request/. If you do, your photos, posts
and profile will disappear from your account but if anyone has shared your photos or
personal details, or if we have used them ourselves for any reason, they might still appear
on Instagram. We will also keep all the data we already have from you and can use it as
explained in paragraph 5 above.

10. We can change these rules whenever we like by posting an update on Instagram,
whether you notice it or not.

Still not exactly short, but a lot shorter than the original and understandable. As I said above, this version is from 2017, so it may not reflect the current state of affairs, but I doubt that the terms have "improved" since.

So, do read through it, then deiced if you want to keep Instagram. At least then you will do it consciously. And do the same for Facebook, WhatsApp and the likes. But there, I am afraid, there still is no "easy" version of their term.

Finally, if you do not understand the terms, do not use the service. After all, you would not sign a written contract without reading and understanding it first, would you? Really, would you?

Apache Access Restriction to LAN Not Working - NOT Solved

I wanted to have a site only available within my LAN.

The configuration should be as simple as this:

         Order Deny,Allow
    Deny from all
    Allow from 127.0.0.1 ::1
    Allow from localhost
    Allow from 192.168.178

Thanks to monit I found that from time to time (about once a month) my site was accessed from an external IP address.

I checked my configuration over and over again, but did not see anything wrong. Still, I had these occasional external requests coming through.

In the end, I decided to use the authz_host_module with the following configuration:

    Require local
    Require ip 192.168.178
    Require host localhost

Since then, there have been no more reports of external IPs accessing my site.

I still do not quite understand why the original approach failed intermittently, but hey, it is secured now.

Update 2021-12-15

After a while the external IPs appeared again in my log. It seems the above was an "accidental solution", because it required me to restart the Apache web server.

I added a cron job to restart Apache every 24 hrs, hoping that this will "fix" the issue for good. If not, I will post an update.

Update 2022-01-04

I still see external IPs accessing my internal site. How this happens will remain a secret to me, I guess. I am at the end of my wits here ... 

Goodbye and Farewell, TeamViewer!

I have (rather "had") been using TeamViewer for many years. It runs smoothly, does its job, has interesting new features such as VR assistance (I love the idea!), but it has been acting up lately.

The program now detects my activities as commercial and will interrupt any connection after one minute until I buy a license. Well, I only ever connect to two people, and they are family. What kind of intelligence sees regular connections to two people as "commercial"?

Maybe it was my fault: all of this started shortly after I had registered, while I had been running TeamViewer without registration without any problems for many years.

I went the official route and signed a PDF stating that I am not a commercial user. To no avail, no contact, no change in behavior.

Of course I could uninstall, delete all data and registry keys, change my MAC address, and re-install. It should work. But is it worth the hassle?

I decided, no. I am using the free version of AnyDesk now. The free version has some limitations that I can live with, and of course has fair-use restrictions as well. Fair enough. I hope that their intelligence is more apt in detecting commercial use than TeamViewer's. For now, it is working fine - it is not as slick as TeamViewer, but does what I need it to do.

So, farewell, TeamViewer, you have a great product, but your commercial-use-detection is beyond annoying and really needs fixing - as does the process to tell you that someone uses it for private purposes only.

Update: About 6 weeks after having submitted the form stating my private use of TeamViewer, I was cleared. Better late than never? Well, it turns out that as a private users I will be kicked out of a session after 30 minutes, but I can reconnect right away. So in theory it is usable, but it still is somewhat of a pain. And I have moved on anyway, so it still is "farewell TeamViewer".

Handy-Ticket? Sorry, nein Danke! Dank LogPay.

Ich finde Handy Tickets einfach Klasse! Genau genommen liebe ich das Konzept, die Umsetzung ist allerdings ... nun ja, ich mochte sachlich bleiben.

Viele Verkehrsverbünde beauftragen für die Zahlungsabwicklung die Firma LogPay. Und mit dieser Firma habe ich ein großes Problem: ich kann meine Kontoverbindung dort nicht registrieren.

Inzwischen weiß ich auch warum: meine Kontoverbindung wurde gesperrt, weil jemand versucht hat, meine Kontonummer zu registrieren. So weit, so gut, danke für den Schutz!

Und jetzt? Jaaaaa ... so einfach ist das nicht: der/die Übeltäter/in müsste sich direkt bei LogPay melden, dann würde mein Konto wieder entsperrt.

Klar, ich rufe den/die mal kurz an.

Wer es war? Kann man mir aus Datenschutzgründen nicht sagen.

Und wie bekomme ich mein Konto jetzt entsperrt?

Offensichtlich gar nicht. Wow!

Leider hat LogPay bei den Verkehrsbetrieben ein Quasi-Monopol und ist fast nicht zu umgehen. Außer man nutzt Papier-Tickets. Mache ich jetzt wieder.

Impossible to Find: Easy-to-Care Electric Kettle

So, I was looking for a kettle that meets a few criteria:

• the lid should be removable
• the opening should be big enough so I can get my hand in for cleaning

Well, it turns out I must be the only one with these selection criteria. Or the market does not care for its customers.

I look on the web for hours on end, I even went as far as looking on Amazon, but I found only one (Chinese) brand that could be a match.

I did find a few kettles that met the two criteria mentioned above but hand many obstacles inside, such as an overly large temperature sensor. This would have made it more or less impossible to remove lime residue.

So let me add "unblocked inside" as a third criterion.

Then I came across KitchenAid, sporting an admittedly high price, but it looks great and meets all criteria:

Well, not quite: when you re-fill the kettle while it is still hot - as you would when you need another cuppa - you will inadvertently steam-cook your hand, as the handle is right above the opening, and not you cannot fill it through the outlet.

OK then, let me add "safe" to my list as well.

So I found (at almost double the already high price) another product from KitchenAid:

This one has the handle on its side, so you do not burn your hand. But hey, what is the button next to the lid? Oh no, the lid does not come off, it just flips open and stay on the kettle, so if you try to clean the inside, chances are you cut yourself.

I cannot believe that there is not a single sensible design out there, but I seem to be unable to find it. Do I really have to give up and use a saucepan for boiling water?

P.S.: hey KitchenAid (or any other manufacturer), can I become a tester for your products?

Nextcloud: Restricting Admin Access to Your LAN

 You really do not want anyone from the internet to be able to access you Nextcloud admin account. A strong password is good, but not good enough. 2FA can help, but I wanted to take absolutely no chances.

So I started looking for a solution to restrict admin access to my LAN. If you break into my LAN, I will be f***ed anyway, so this will be as good as it gets ...

I found a solution on the web (copied all over the place in different forums) employing mod_rewrite. Well, it works, but after I had implemented it, I did not like the flaw this solution has: since mod_rewrite cannot read the request data of the post request that resembles the login attempt, it acts on cookies instead, meaning that the login itself will still be executed and a good hacker may intercept the authentication token and use it in some other way. I do not have a proof of concept for a hack, but do not like the idea.

So I looked at mod_security, and felt much better: it can look at post data. I now intercept login requests from admin, and reject them if the remote address is not on my LAN. The relevant portion of the Apache configuration file looks like this:

Now I feel much better😀

It would be nice though, if Nextcloud offered an option like this. There is a Nextcloud app (called "Restrict login to IP addresses") that can restrict access to certain IPs and IP ranges, but it does not distinguish by account, so it is no solution for my scenario.

Gelöst: Bahn DB Navigator App: Fehlendes Zertifikat bei Buchung

Seit ein paar Wochen bekomme ich (wahrscheinlich wegen einer neuen Version) folgende Meldung von der Bahn App, wenn ich ein Ticket buchen möchte:

Auf dem Gerät ist kein gültiges Zertifikat vorhanden, um eine sichere Verbindung aufbauen zu können. Bitte prüfen Sie Ihre Systemeinstellungen oder aktualisieren Sie Ihr Betriebssystem.

Ich habe etwas länger geforscht ... aber kurz und kapp: ich musste meinen Ad Blocker deaktivieren, einmal "buchen" drücken, dann konnte ich den Ad Blocker wieder aktivieren, und das Buchen funktioniert bestens.

Natürlich könnte man weiter schauen, welche IP genau zu white-listen wäre, aber solange es wieder geht - wozu die Zeit verschwenden?

Sollte es nur ein temporärer Fix sein, dann schaue ich nochmal genauer.

Ich hoffe, das hilft anderen, ihre Zeit zu sparen. Ich habe zumindest viele ähnliche Problemfälle im Web gefunden, jedoch jeweils ohne passende Lösung.

Schade, der Fix war nur temporär. Aber hier kommt die

In meinem Ad Blocker musste ich zwei Hosts white-listen (ich hasse Denglisch):

• st.bahn.de

Danach funktioniert alles bestens, und zwar permanent. Aber, hier kommt dann aber auch gleich noch eine

Warnung

Ob man das mit Qualtrics so gut findet, ist eine offene Frage ... welche Daten werden hier gesammelt?

Ganz bestimmt finde ich den Zugriff auf st.bahn.de nicht gut, denn dieser Server sammelt Benutzer- und Benutzungsaten. Da ich die Datenübermittlung in der App auf das notwendige beschränkt habe, frage ich mich, warum hierauf trotzdem zugegriffen wird. Beachtet die neue Version nun meine Einstellungen nicht mehr?

Auf jeden Fall sollte man es sich gut überlegen, bevor man die beiden Server "freischaltet".

Stell Dir vor es ist Wahlkampf, und keiner geht hin

Noch 11 Wochen bis zur Bundestagswahl.

Und von den Parteien hört man nichts. Gut, das stimmt so nicht ganz, man hört persönliche Angriffe, verquere Positionen um in die Presse zu kommen, etc. Aber inhaltlich? Ein großes Nichts.

Dabei gäbe es so viele Themen.

UmweltKlima: bisher nur nette Absichtserklärungen als Feigenblatt, von Ideen für Maßnahmen oder gar Plänen keine Rede.

Corona: ja man kann es nicht mehr hören, aber davon geht es nicht weg. Zugegeben, hier gab es großen Einsatz: wie haben die EM ermöglicht, und einzelne Bundesländer lassen alle Hüllen Schranken fallen. Ein Plan für den Schulbetrieb im Herbst? Fehlanzeige. Wie stehen so blank da wie vor einem Jahr. Immerhin habe Lehrer und Schüler dazugelernt. Ob sie damit die Abwesenheit politischer Maßnahmen kompensieren können? Und sollten sie das müssen?

Flüchtlinge: Seenotrettung verhindern, an den Grenzen mit Waffengewalt abschrecken, und Unrechtsregime dafür bezahlen, dass sie Flüchtlinge "retten" und kasernieren - das ist kein Plan, das ist Verrat an Europäischen Idealen.

Sieht doch zumindest für einige Politiker ganz gut aus. Oder?

Die Darstellung "hinkt". Denn die Skala reicht von -5 bis +5. Und wenn man das dann korrekt darstellt:

 

Dann sieht man doch recht deutlich, wie sich die oben beschriebene Wahlkampf-"Strategie" auswirkt: kein Politiker kann sich deutlich von der Nulllinie absetzen. 

Das kommt davon, wenn alle Politiker die sogenannte "Mitte" vertreten wollen, und um es sich mit ja niemandem zu verscherzen letzten Endes eigentlich gar nichts vertreten.

Vielleicht wäre es Zeit, dass die Medien den Politikern ein paar aktuelle Themen präsentieren und sie zwingen, sich zu positionieren? Wie soll man denn so eine Wahlentscheidung treffen? Lauwarm, oder lieber ... lauwarm?

Android: Clock Showing Upcoming Non-Existent Alarm

Since my last Android upgrade, this has bugged me a lot: my clock always showed an alarm that was due at 8pm every day. BUt there was no such alarm.

Clearing the clock's data did not help at all.

After restarting the phone, the alarm did not show - until a few minutes had gone by. So I assumed that it was a service that created its own alarm when started.

I went through all my apps, killing them one by one, until the clock showed no alarm any more. Alas, it took me a loooong time to find the culprit: apps are sorted alphabetically, and the app that was causing this is Tasker with a "T" 😉.

I had a task defined that would trigger at 8pm, and Taker uses am alarm to get the trigger working. Makes sense.

Showing upcoming alarms as part of the clock seems to be a feature added in Android 10.

I ended up turning off "reliable alarms", in which case Tasker does not create such an alarm. I am not sure how it achieves the goal otherwise, but I know that alarms can be less reliable (as the name of the option indicates), but I do not care about a few minutes here. It also means that it will be easier for Android to kill Taker entirely when it feels like it. That is something that remains to be seen - still testing.

Anyway, the nagging upcoming alarm is gone. It did not do any harm, but it bugged me each time I turned on my phone, so there 😀

I hope this saves someone else the time I had to spend looking for the app that cause this non-issue.

Bayerischer Rundfunk? Eher nicht!

Natürlich habe ich mich jahrelang mit Nachrichten unseres Landessenders B5 Aktuell wecken lassen. Die Nachrichten alle 15 Minuten und die Info-Sendungen dazwischen erschienen mir wirklich gut.

Ich hatte jedenfalls nie den leisesten Zweifel daran, dass es sich um einen objektiven und neutralen Sender handelt.

Bis eines Tages ... das ist auch schon ein paar Jahre her ... sich folgendes zutrug: tagsüber hörte ich eine BR-Sendung mit einem Ausschnitt eines Interviews mit Sahra Wagenknecht. Nun bin ich kein großer Fan der Dame, schätze aber ihre Intelligenz. Und das Interview-Schnipsel ließ sie wie eine Partei-Idiotin dastehen, die der Doktrin mehr verpflichtet ist, als dem gesunden Menschenverstand. Ich weiß gar nicht mehr, worum es ging. Jedenfalls hat es mich sehr gewundert, aber es war ja ein O-Ton, also korrekt. Oder?

Zufällig hörte ich nachts denselben Sender, da es aber nach Mitternacht war, hörte ich das ARD Inforadio, damals betrieben vom NDR. Und da kam dasselbe Interview. Nur ein, zwei Sätze länger. Und plötzlich machte es Sinn. Zufall? Möglich.

Inzwischen habe ich meinen Lebensrhythmus etwas umgestellt und höre B5 Aktuell (oder BR 24, wie es jetzt heißt) so früh, dass ich noch das ARD Inforadio zu hören bekomme, bevor sich der bayerische Rundfunk aufschaltet. Un da fiel mir in letzter (Wahlkamp-)Zeit doch das eine oder andere auf:

• -Der BR berichtet zwar über die von den Grünen geplante Benzinpreiserhöhung, lässt aber die Information, dass die derzeitige Bundesregierung die dafür ausschlaggebende CO2-Steuer selbst beschlossen hat, gerne weg. Auch davon, dass die Grünen den bereits vorgesehenen Zeitplan nur etwas straffen und die Abgabe nur unwesentlich erhöhen wollen (Wissenschaftler fordern das Dreifache), ist im BR nicht die Rede.
• Der BR berichtet über die starke Erhöhung der Benzinpreise in den letzten zwei Jahren. Ich glaube, es waren 26 Cent. Auch den Grund dafür nennen sie: die gestiegenen Rohölpreise. Dass diese auch durch die CO2-Steuer der heutigen Bundesregierung so stark gestiegen sind (ich glaube 12 von den 26 Cent gehen auf dieses Konto), erwähnen sie nicht.

Nur dass keine Zweifel aufkommen: ich finde die CO2-Steuer vollkommen richtig (wenn auch zu niedrig), insbesondere mit der von den Grünen vorgesehenen Entlastung für sozial Schwächere. Ach ja, davon war im BR auch nichts zu hören ...

Durch die ARD Infonacht habe ich NDR und WDR kennen uns schätzen gelernt. Ich höre weiterhin öfters BR, schon alleine wegen des lokalen Bezugs, nehme aber die Nachrichten nicht mehr notwendigerweise für bare Münze. Nicht, dass sie Falsches berichten würden, aber die Präsentation der Nachrichten hat für mich doch eine gewisse Färbung, die mir nicht mehr ganz neutral erscheint.

Gerade bei Nachrichten, die Deutschland und das Ausland betreffen verlasse ich mich lieber auf meine Zeitung und die Nachrichten-Podcasts von NDR und WDR. Den beiden vielen Dank an dieser Stelle!

Gendern - aber praktikabel!

 Die Gender-Manie macht unsere Sprache sehr unhandlich. Zwei Beispiele:

• letztens sprach ein Reporter von "Jüdinnen und Jüden"
• die Beamtinnen und Beamten müssen ihre Zeugen und Zeuginnen  ...

Das mit dem Schwah-Laut (BeamtInnen oder BeamtInnen) ist auch nicht viel besser, man unterbricht sich selbst, und JüdInnen gibt es dann immer noch nicht.

Kurz und gut, das verschwurbelte Gendern bringt Sprecher und Zuhörer gleichermaßen aus dem Takt.

Der Grund dahinter ist legitim, der Ansatz aber nicht praktikabel. Hier eine Alternative an obigen Beispielen:

• Jüdinnen
• die Beamtinnen müssen ihre Zeuginnen ...

Sprich: wenn über beiderlei Geschlecht gesprochen wird, wird die weibliche Form gewählt. Nach Hunderten von Jahren, in denen dies für die männliche Form galt, ist es ein fairer Ausgleich, das einmal umzudrehen, bis die Sprache eine natürlichere Form entwickelt hat.

Und das Gute dabei: bei dieser Form denkt man zuerst an Frauen, was bei Begriffen wie Vorständinnen nur hilfreich sein kann, den Gender-Gap auch in den Gehirnen weiter aufzulösen. Und genau darum geht es ja beim Gendern. Oder?

Nur für eines ist auch dieser Ansatz keine Lösung: spricht man bei Angela Merkel jetzt tatsächlich von Kanzlerinnenschaft statt Kanzlerschaft? Das habe ich schon so gehört, und es rollt mir die Fußnägel auf! Bei zusammengesetzten Wörtern vielleicht besser einfach lassen?

TAZ: Cookie Policy an der Grenze der DSGVO? Oder Lücken in der DSGVO?

 Auf der Website der TAZ bekommt man folgende Meldung:

Natürlich kann man jetzt eine halbe Stunde die ganzen Angaben lesen - oder "Selbst auswählen" drücken, der schon ganz unschön weniger hervorgehoben ist als das gewollte "Alles akzeptieren". Ich vermute, das ist aber noch innerhalb der DSGVO.

Will man selbst auswählen, dann bekommt man folgende Seite:

Hier hat man es mit einer ganzen Litanei von "Berechtigten Interessen" zu tun. Diese einzeln durchgehen würde eine ganze Weile dauern. Überraschend ist für mich auch, dass z. B. "Ein persönliches Anzeigen-Profil erstellen" eine berechtigte Nutzung sein soll - aber der Begriff ist wahrscheinlich gar nicht gesetzlich definiert und soll mir die Legitimität der Datensammlung vorgaukeln. Naja, wenn man zustimmt, ist es das ja auch :-)

Um die Datensammlung zu minimieren, muss man hier den mittleren Knopf "Allem widersprechen" drücken. Das ist alles machbar, aber die Pfade sind verschlungen, und das sicher nicht ohne Grund: wer macht sich schon die Mühe und verbringt mehr Zeit mit den Cookie-Einstellungen als mit dem Lesen.

Das alles ist wahrscheinlich DSGVO-konform. Meiner Meinung nach hat die DSGVO hier aber eine Lücke: das Vermeiden von Tracking sollte für den Benutrzer genauso einfach sein, wie das Akzeptieren. Hierzu fehlt leider eine Vorschrift.

Ich kann mir so gar nicht vorstellen, dass dies die DSGVO erlaubt. Mein Verständnis der DSGVO ist, dass die Webseite (ggf. eingeschränkt) nutzbar sein muss, wenn ich nur "funktionale Cookies" akzeptiere - diese Wahl habe ich hier aber gar nicht.

Einzelne Artikel mit einer Paywall zu versehen wäre verständlich, niemand arbeitet umsonst. Aber dieses Vorgehen (von IT-Fachleuten!), das zu einer faktischen Sperre der Seite bzw. Tracking-Zwang führt, halte ich für nicht DSGVO-konform.

Bash Script to Rename all Files and Folders Containing Special Characters

Apparently, Sonos still does not fully support SMB v3, it has problems with files and folders containing special characters, in my case umlauts.

The script below renames all of the "offending" items, you can easily adapt it to your purposes. Hope you find it useful.

A note to Sonos: your posh brand should really not be relying on SMB v1 any more. It's 20201, guys, and some people do care about their security! But I guess I have to consider myself lucky for being able to connect to my server at all, as it requires v3.

Windows 10 Explorer Weird Sorting

I accidentally came across this weird sorting behavior. Look at the following list of files, sorted by Name:

Is Windows trying a mixture of alphanumeric and numeric sorting?

If you compare the first group of files with the last one, it does not look like a numeric interpretation, as in the last group, the number is prefixed by "a".

The second group is most interesting: 0101 comes after 02, but 01x01 comes before. How strange is that?

Am I overlooking something? I started thinking I was wrong and even verified my own understanding of sorting using Excel. Am I going nuts?

Well, not quite: apparently Explorer does interpret sequences of digits a numbers. No other OS does that! Hell, not even the command prompt does:

I will just use the additional separator (as in 01x01) for now to make sure that my files get sorted appropriately. i. e. the way I need it.

But I would really appreciate MS to fix this. At least the sort behavior should be consistent within a single OS. Preferably in line with all the others ;-)

And thanks a lot to MS for having me doubt myself for quite a while.

Distractions at Work - Imposed by Your Emplyer and Colleagues

OK, maybe not in your workplace, you may be lucky. But I have seen the following examples way too often.

Email

Email is an asynchronous communication medium. This is great, because the sender values your time and asks you to read and act on it when you have time. Well, not all senders: some send you an email and five minutes later you get a phone call asking whether you got their email. A good response may be: "I don't know. I am working on [...] and will process my emails later."

For me email is a great medium for documented communications, meeting notes, memos, etc, which you can read at you own schedule. It also is great if you work across time zones. If you have something urgent, pick up the phone and talk.

Messengers

Some employers feel that their employees need to be available and respond immediately to certain requests. I am not quite sure what is wrong with using the phone? Maybe because you cannot see whether they are working? But it only means they are online, not necessarily working or available. Do you want them to spend time updating their status whenever they start a task?

Mobile Phones

Depending on the company policy, a mobile phone can be a kind of leash. Some require you to answer it not only when you are not at work, but also during your vacation. If you are in a situation like this, your only escape is to pick a home and holiday location without network coverage.

Everything at once

On one occasion - and never again later on, I guess I had made myself very clear - I had this call on my mobile phone: "I sent you and email, and called you, but your phone was busy. So I contacted you in the messenger, but you did not respond, so I am calling your mobile.".

No, it was not a matter of live or death. I my phone is busy, chance are, I am too. And this may actually become a matter of live or death if it should happen again.

Message Boards

You may have different message boards on systems such as project platforms, training platforms, HR systems, and whatnot. They might send you an email that there is something to check out, but you need to go into these systems to read it.

Adding more channels to your communication does not help the information overflow.

Calendar

Meeting requests are a great way to coordinate with each other, but ...

Working across time zones, I had to defend myself by blocking time

• before 8am for my commute. Conference calls on the train are a no-go in my view, not for some others on my train though
  
• in the morning to catch up with emails and administrative tasks
• for lunch
• just before I wanted to leave, so I could finish open tasks and leave a clean desk
• after 9pm for my (private) evening

Tasks and Politeness

In MS Outlook you can not only book another person's calendar, but also assign tasks. Of course, these are just requests, and you and accept or decline.

There is not enough time to be polite to everyone, especially if they are not considerate of your time in the first place.

So I would decline meeting requests that collide with an already scheduled appointment without any explanation. If you urgently need me to free up time on my calendar for you, let's talk beforehand.

Any other meeting requests will usually be accepted, or I would politely state the reason for declining.

I would generally decline task requests: I plan my own tasks. If you need me, let's talk about it and I will factor it in.

Meetings and Conference Calls

Be on Time

Be on time, or I may be gone. Otherwise I will be late for my next meeting, and that would not be considerate of other people's time, would it?

No Overrun

We have a hard stop. If anything else needs to be discussed, schedule another meeting. Otherwise I will be late for my next ... well, you already know.

Behave Yourselves

Especially in video conferences you have people catching up with their email, taking phone calls, etc. If you are in a meeting, you are in a meeting. Or if I am the organizer, you may be kicked.

The worst I have seen so far was two people apparently chatting (messengers again) with each other during the video conference. One would type, the other would laugh, and vice-versa. I can see that, you are in a video conference - or rather, you were.

Defending against Distractions

A big first step is to put your email client in offline mode. Then, when you switch tasks, you can catch up. The distracting "you have a new email" messages are gone. I know I was never able to resist opening new messages, so this was kind of a self-disciplinary action.

Shut down your messenger. If you can't, put it on "busy", or even better, enable an automatic reply to tell people to contact you via email of phone.

Divert your desk phone to your mobile. This way, busy is busy.

Now you are down to only two communication channels: email (asynchronous) and a single phone line (synchronous)

Reducing the number of channels reduces your stress level and you will gain more control over your day. Being able to work on a task without interruptions yields better results, fast, and in a relatively relaxed way.

Remove Microsoft's Latest Distraction: News and Interests

I prefer to work on my computer and not be distracted by its operating system.

Hence, Microsoft News and Interests in the taskbar is more than a nuisance to me.

Here is how to disable it:

• start gpedit
• go to Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - News and interests 
• open the entry Enable news and interests
• disable it
• you need to log off or restart your computer for the setting to take effect
• go back to work without distractions

Where do you want to install Windows? And no disk!

If you are installing Windows and you get to the screen where it asks "Where do you want to install Windows?", and the list of partitions is empty, chances are your installation media is missing a driver.

The screen says: "We couldn't find any drives". When you follow their advice and click "Load driver", there are no drivers to be found.

This happened to me when installing Windows 10 Pro on a Dell laptop, I have seen similar reports regarding HP machines. While I could not find any support on the Dell site, I found this on the HP support site: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06983517

If you are installing from a CD ROM, you are pretty much stuck now. Switch to installing from a USB drive. Then you can add the necessary drivers and load them as described in the HP article.

So basically, you download the driver for your hard disk from the manufacturer's support site, you do not execute but open the file using Winzip or 7-Zip and extract the files and folders to you USB drive. I used a sub folder named "drivers" to keep the structure clean.

Then, when you see the empty list during your installation process, just click "Load driver", navigate to the folder containing the driver, and you will see your drive and partitions.

It is simple if you know what to do. But in my research process I came across an abundance of posts that were completely unhelpful, ranging from checking the cables and power supply for the disk to changing BIOS settings. All of these posts may be relevant under certain circumstances, but please do try this simple and way less invasive procedure first 😊

Deutschland einig Fahrradland

Gestern wurde verkündet, dass der Ausbau und Neubau der Fahrrwdwege in Deutschland losgehen soll.

Endlich! Hurra!!!

Und das macht dann der Bundesverkehrsminister, also "da Andi", also Andreas B. Scheuer.

Ach so, ja dann ... schade!

Vorgestellt hat Andi die Neuerung mit Fahrrad und Helm. Ob er auch gefahren ist? Der Dienstwagen muss jedenfalls gleich um die Ecke gestanden haben, denn kurze Zeit später hatte er einen weiteren Termin: hopp, Fahrrad in den Kofferraum (nicht belegt) und losdüsen zur Eröffnung eines neuen - nein kein Fahrradweg - Autobahnabschnitts.

Geh zurück nach Bayern, da gibt es Vereine, die Dich aufnehmen (CSU), und da darfst Du Deinen "kleinen" Doktortitel aus Prag auch führen. Jeder CSUler, der nicht in der Bundespolitik sitzt ("arbeitet" kann man ja nicht sagen) ist ein Gewinn. Und spart zudem noch eine Menge Geld. "Ja, aber nicht meines.", sagt der Andi dazu. Ach geh!

Trotzdem: schade wegen der Fahrradwege, die nicht gebaut werden.

Android Adopted Storage Kills My SD Card

I am not saying that all Android versions or build will do this. Mine certainly does, and it is not a problem with the SD card.

Here is what happened: About a year ago I had formatted my SD card as adopted storage, which is really convenient as it just extends the internal storage and you do not have to think about what goes where.

All worked fine (LineageOS) until I received yet another OS update. I am not sure whether I upgraded from 17 to 18 or whether it was just an update within version 18). Soon after installing this update, my SD card started failing and degrading. Within two days my phone stated that the SD card was corrupted.

The card would not format in the phone, also Debian and Windows failed to format it. The card was destroyed. Hardware failure, I thought.

I installed a new SD card, formatting it again as adopted storage. After I had recovered all my apps (thanks so much, Titanium Backup!) it took only a day before the new card failed in the same way. Another piece of garbage.

Of course, now a hardware failure was more than unlikely.

With the next SD card I went back to the good old ways of using it as external storage. I cannot move the apps the the SD card any more, but moving DCIM and backup folders for Titanium Backup and NAND to the SD card freed up enough storage for me to feel quite comfortable.

The new card is still alive. I will never go back to adopted storage, even though I certainly like the idea.

The whole process of restoring apps (twice) took me two days, despite having backups. The good thing is that I now have a completely new installation and further improved my backup strategy. You can always learn something :-)

P.S.: Thanks to LineageOS (unofficial build) I am still more than happy with my 2013 (!) Samsung Galaxy Note 3. I would not want to trade it for a newer phone.

Warum Söder kommen MUSS

Axel Zucken (MdB, CDU) spricht offen darüber, warum Markus Söder der Kanzlerkandidate der Union werden muss.

Unser Reporter Rainer Hohn konnte direkt im Anschluss an die Vorstellung der beiden Kandidaten Armin Laschet (CDU) und Markus Söder (Bayern) und der Aussprache in der Unions-Fraktion ein kurzes Gespräch mit Herrn Zucken führen.

Rainer Hohn (RH): Herr Zucken, wie haben Sie die Vorstellung der Bewerber erlebt?
Axel Zucken (AZ): Also, der Armin war für seine Verhältnisse eher forsch als lasch, aber in dieser Disziplin kann man dem Markus einfach nichts vormachen. Markus hat offensichtlich die Kreide, die er vor einigen Tagen geschluckt hatte, nun mit einem Weißbier heruntergespült und ist so unver ... äh ... offen, wie man ihn kennt und wofür man ihn schätzt.
Beide Bewerber haben viele Feh ... äh ... Stärken, da schenken die sich nichts.

RH: Dann wäre Ihnen ein dritter Bewerber ganz recht, Herr Zucken?
AZ: So kann man das nicht sagen - dann kommt wieder so ein Merz. Bei den beiden weiß man halt, was man hat. Und für mich, wie für die meisten meiner Kollegen ist es ganz klar, dass der Markus der bessere Mann für uns ist.

RH: Tatsächlich? Dreht sich sich bei Herrn Söder nicht alles um ihn selbst? Zumindest in der bayrischen Politik war er doch eher ein Fähnchen im Wind. Wie kann er ein guter Budeskanzler werden, da müsste er ja Interessen anderer Leute vertreten?
AZ: Ja, Fähnchen, also stattliche Unions-Flaggen, sind sie ja beide. Sie spielen wohl auf solche Geschichten an, wie die Zerstörung eines Naturschutzgebiets zum Wohle zweier Skigebiete, die Markus anfangs durchsetzungsstark vertreten hat. Er hat doch später eingesehen, dass er damit Stimmen verliert und ist jetzt ein überzegter Grüner.
Armin hat das zwar auch drauf, weiß es aber nicht für sich und damit unsere Partei zu nutzen. Er kann ja nicht einmal richtig bestechlich sein, da arbeitet er über seinen Sohn.

RH: Und da haben Sie aus Überzeugung Herrn Söders Lied angestimmt?
AZ: Ja nun, Überzeugung ist ein starkes Wort. Wer von beiden Kanzler wird, ist letztendlich egal, es macht kaum einen Unterschied. Wichtiger ist, wie zugkräftig der Kandidat für unseren gesamten Bundestagswahlkampf ist. Schließlich wollen meine Kollegen und ich ja auch in der nächsten Lxika ... Lechsi ... Legislaturperioede wieder in den Bundestag einziehen. Ich kann ja sonst nichts. Äh ... in der Politik bewegen.

RH: Herr Söder hat ja bisher - soweit bekannt ist - nicht versucht, sich an der Krise zu bereichern. Passt er denn damit überhaupt in die Union?
AZ: Ja so ist das ja auch nicht! Ich zum Beispiel konnte die Ehrenerklärung sogar ganz ohne gekrezte Finger unterschreiben. Ich kann guten Gewissens sagen, dass ich mich nicht an der Krise bereichert habe. Zumindest nicht an ser Corona-Krise. Ich sitze ja im Verteidigungsausschuss, das geht es um andere Krisen, die man nutzen kann ... äh ... bekämpfen muss.
Und wenn dem Markus da noch Erfahrung fehlen sollte, dann nehmen wir ihn unter unsere Fittiche. Wir sind ja alle Amigos.

RH: ...
AZ: So, jetzt muss ich aber los, es gibt immer noch ein paar Unbeugsame, die meinen, dass CSU-ler in der Bundespolitik nichts zu suchen haben. Nur wegen so ein paar kleinen Ausrutschern wie dem Andi. Und dem Horst - obwohl der Horst doch eigentlich gar nichts macht. Naja, und der Glyphosat-Schmidt. Und der Dobrindt. Und ... na, die meisten haben doch wirklich ganze Arbeit geleistet. Da kann man den Bock doch auch zum Gä ... den Markus zum Budenkasperl ... Bundeskanzler machen. Ich werde mal sehen, wen ich noch überzeugen kann.

Android Accessibility - Not Quite so Accessible

I knew from my last phone running an older version of Android that you can enable a magnifying mode that is activated by a triple-tap on the screen.

Having reduced eyesight, I am quite fond of this feature and wanted to enable it on my new phone running Android 11.

I found the Accessibility settings without a problem. The next screen was different from what I was used to, but I did find Magnification entry.

And then I was lost:

There is a feature "Magnification shortcut" that I could enable. Then a message would explain how I can use the accessibility button to start magnification when I needed it. Only, I do not have such a button.

My phone has hardware buttons, duh!

The screen just says "Magnification shortcut, Accessibility button".

Nothing indicates, that you can change this shortcut. Well, you can. The label is clickable, then you can choose.

There was still one more obstacle: to get to the triple-tap option, you need to scroll down past the two visible options and click "advanced". Only then you can see the third option, triple-tap. Why hide one of only three options under "advanced"?

It took me half a day of trial-and-error to figure out the process, straining my eyes further. If I had not know that the option existed (and I sometimes was close to thinking they removed it), I would never have found this feature.

If you need a manual to operate your Android phone, Google did not meet its own guidelines. And if you need one, but there is no manual, because Google aims at ease-of-use, you are down a certain creek without a paddle.

Now I am finally happy. With the functionality. Not so much with how "accessible" this option is.

Coronal Regeln - lokal anpassen!

Die Ministerpräsidenten und Frau Merkel verabschieden regelmäßig (daher der Name) Corona-Regeln.

Die Ministerpräsidenten vertreten diese in ihren Bundesländern - oder auch nicht. Denn man muss sich ja flexibel zeigen und Regionen für die Wirtschaft das Virus offen halten. Also unterschiedliche Regeln für Bundesländer je nach Inzidenz-Lage oder Gusto des Landesfürsten.

Kommunen unterschieden sich ja auch. Lasst uns das doch auf kommunaler Ebene entscheiden.

Und was ist mit Haushalten? Wir könnten doch die Inzidenz pro Haushalt berechnen, und je nachdem geht der komplette Haushalt in den Lock-Down. Und ringsum kann alles geöffnet bleiben.

Single Haushalt: Inzidenz kann 0 (keine Infizierten) oder 100.000 (alle infiziert, also einer, und das hochgerechnet auf 100.000 Einwohner - Inzidenzwert eben)

Familie, 4 Personen: schon bei einer Infektion liegt die Inzidenz bei 25.000, der Haushalt ist geschlossen, und die Welt sicher.

Damit erübrigen sich auch die kleinlichen Verhandlungen, was machen wir bei 100, was bei 50. Und wäre 35 nicht besser? Und 200 ist dann tief rot? Ab 500 schwarz? Alles Quatsch: 0 ist gut, und alles ab 1.000 ist schlecht, fertig.

Wir gründen jetzt ein Haushalts-Cluster mit dem Ziel, 200 Personen zusammenzubekommen. Dann macht ein Infizierte eine Inzidenz von nur 500 aus und wir können weiter frei herumspringen.

Und wenn ein zweiter dazu kommt? Dann clustern wir um, tauschen einen Infizierten gegen einen Gesunden, fertig. Wir bleiben offen, basta!

Ach, ich hätte in die Politik gehen sollen. Unsinn fällt mir genug ein. Nur das nötige moralische Vakuum geht mir ab.

Entschuldigung: Merkel vs Scheuer - ach ja, und die Karzlerkandidaten

 Dass Angela Merkel hier alle Schuld auf sich nimmt, liegt sicher nur daran, dass sie die "Kanzlerhoffnungen" Söder und Laschet aus der Schusslinie halten möchte.

Dass die Opposition (inklusive der Oppositions-/Regierungspartei SPD) darauf reinfällt und auf Frau Merkel eindrischt, ist ein Armutszeugnis.

Frau Merkel hat hier nichts allein entschieden, alle Ministerpräsidenten waren im Boot. Sie haben nicht einmal - wie sonst üblich - in der Konferenz die Hälfte der Punkte abgelehnt und ein paar Stunden später für die restlichen verabschiedeten Punkte Ausnahmen definiert.

Seltsam ruhig ist es immer noch um den Verkehrsminister, dessen Nachname sich für einer nicht zu nennenden Eselsbrücke anbietet. Nichr nur, dass er nie die Verantwortung für Vorkommnisse übernehmen würde, an denen er beteiligt war, nein, auch für solche Dinge nicht, die ganz und gar ihm allein zuzuschreiben sind. Entschuldigung? Warum? Er macht keine Fehler.

Also haben wir hier die zwei Enden des breiten Spektrums der Union, es liegt viel Luft zwischen Merkel und beScheuer. Luft im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes.

A propos Luft und Luftnummer: die von Laschet angeregte Ehrenerklärung ist noch weniger wert (wenn das geht) als das Ehrenwort von Herrn Barschel. Die kann Herr Laschet guten Gewissens ja nicht einmal selbst unterschreiben - ach so, das lief über seinen Sohn - ja dann kann er natürlich.

Söder hat wenigstens kein Interesse an Selbstbereicherung - ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal in der Union. Gut, an Deutschland eigentlich auch nicht. An der Umwelt bis vor einiger Zeit auch nicht. Aber immerhin an sich selbst, und das ist doch schon was.

Und alles, wirklich alles, ist besser als Merz. Man kann nur hoffen, dass er nicht wie der Kasperl plötzlich aus einer Kiste springt.

Ach, über die Union könnte ich stundenlang ... aber was bringt's? Nur schlechte Laune. Also Schluss damit!

Schufa Tricks

 Die Schufa greift gern zu Trick, hier zwei davon.

 

1. Kostenpflichtige Selbstauskunft

Die Schufa ist verpflichtet, einmal im Jahr eine kostenlose Selbstauskunft zu ermöglichen. Damit das nicht zu leicht wird, ist das Formular gut hinter den kostenpflichtigen Dienstleistungen versteckt.

So kommt man (fast) direkt zum Formular: https://www.meineschufa.de/index.php?site=11_3 und dann in der Spalte "Datenkopie nach Art. 15 DS-GVO" ganz unten auf "Jetzt bestellen" klicken. Ein direkter Link auf das Formular ist nicht möglich, ein falscher Klick kostet 9,95€ plus 3,95€ monatlich.

 

2. Daten abgreifen, wenn "Kunden" eine Selbstauskunft verlangen

"Kunde" in Anführungszeichen, denn  das Verhältnis ist ja nicht ganz freiwillig. Ich habe nicht einmal eine Auftragsverarbeitungsvetrag mit der Schufa, das hält sie aber nicht von der Speicherung und Verarbeitung meiner Daten ab. Aber ich schweife ab ...

Auf meine Informatiosanfrage erhielt ich ein Schreiben, in dem ich dazu aufgefordert werde, eine beidseitige Kopie meines Personalausweises zu übermitteln, denn:

Die in unserem Datenbestand zu Ihrer Person gespeicherten Adressdaten weichen von den
Angaben in Ihrer Anfrage ab. Eine eindeutige und damit sichere Zuordnung Ihrer Anfrage zu Ihren persönlichen Daten ist daher aktuell nicht möglich.

Warum das nicht sein kann:

1. Ich heiße nicht Lieschen Müller. Es gibt in ganz Deutschland weniger als 10 Personen mit meinem Nachnamen. Dann nimmt man noch das Geburtsdatum hinzu, et voilà.
2. Die letzte Auskunft hatte ich problemlos bekommen, an genau dieselbe Adresse. Umgezogen bin ich seither nicht, und nein, meinen Namen habe ich ebenfalls nicht geändert.

Ich kann also nur vermuten (eine Stichprobengröße von Eins hat zugegebenermaßen keine hohe Konfidenz), dass die Schufa über diesen Weg an mehr Informationen kommen möchte.

Und das hätte sie auch dringend nötige: in meiner letzten Auskunft war ein Konto aufgeführt, das ich schon seit Jahren nicht mehr hatte, und dessen Bank nicht mehr existiert. Dafür war mein aktuelles Konto nicht aufgeführt.

Es empfiehlt sich auf jeden Fall, alles außer den nötigen Angaben zu schwärzen. Die nötigen Angaben sind: Vor- und Nachname, Anschrift, Geburtsdatum und -ort Alles andere, insbesondere das Bild und die Ausweisnummer sollte man schwärzen.

Corona: Regeln sind Regeln, der Sinn ist egal

Eine Regel ist bei unserer Stadtverwaltung nachzulesen: ab einer Inzidenz von 100 gibt es wieder Distanz-Unterriecht.

So war mir bereits letzte Woche recht klar, dass die Kinder diese Woche zu Hause bleiben, denn die Inzidenz ging rasch auf die 100 zu. Freitag war sie bei 99, Samstag dann wie zu erwarten darüber.

Und was passiert: Nüscht.

Ich habe nachgefragt, und folgendes erfahren:

Die oben genannte Regel ist nicht vollständig, es wird am Freitag entschieden, was die Schule in der kommenden Woche macht. Was im Laufe der betreffenden Woche passiert, ist egal, Hauptsache der vorausgegangene Freitag war unter 100. Und das war er mit 99 "deutlich".

Die vollständige Regel wird dem "einfachen Bürger" nicht präsentiert, da muss man schon nachfragen, dann bekommt man einen Link zum vollständigen Text.

Warum das so ist, ist mir klar: wäre die Regel in der vollständigen Fassung für jeden sofort sichtbar, dann hätte sich schnell die Frage nach der Sinnhaftigkeit gestellt. Und das will man als Landesregierung tunlichst vermeiden.

Aber gut, die Verwaltung hat sich strikt an die Regel gehalten. Und über den Sinn nachzudenken verbietet sich von selbst, denn "einfache Verwaltungen" dürfen nicht in Eigeninitiative abweichen.

Versucht, etwas zurückzusenden – Fehler.

Sich auf Email oder Telefonsupport verlassen – Kardinalfehler!

 

Was bekommt man, wenn man bei Bershka eine Retoure anmeldet? Einen QR Code, den die DHL Annahmestelle einscannen soll.

Unsere Annahmestelle ist die Post. Und da es sich um eine kleine Post handelt, haben sie keinen Scanner.

Bei anderen Firmen bekommt man in dem Fall problemlos eine "menschenlesbares" Etikett. Bei Bershka? Fehlanzeige. Meine Versuche:

• 5 x Email mit Bestellnummer und Hinweis, dass der QR Code nicht funktionieren kann.
  Ergebnis: 5 neue QR Codes. Da stecken doch Bots (ggf. auch menschliche) hinter den Emails ...
  
• 1 x Anruf bei der Hotline. Nach anfänglichem Zögern verstanden, ja klar schicken sie zu.
  Ergebnis: nichts.
• 2 x Email (ohne Bestellnummer) mit der Frage nach der Anschrift für Retouren - inzwischen bin ich ja gerne bereit, die Rücksendung selbst zu bezahlen.
  Ergebnis: das "freundliche" Angebot, wenn ich die Bestellnummer nenne, mir einen QR Code zu erzeugen. Bot?
  
• 1 x Fax, mit dem Angebot, dass sie mir ihre Adresse nennen können, oder das Paket an die Firmenzentrale geht. Am Wochenende ist der Fax-Empfang übrigens abgestellt. Aber am Montag ging es durch.
  Ergebnis: Keine Antwort. Schade um die Mühe, das immer noch freundlich und zusätzlich auch auf Englisch und Spanisch zu formulieren. Man weiß ja nie, wer auf der Empfängerseite sitzt – wenn es denn eine gäbe.
•  1 x Anruf bei der Hotline. Sehr freundlich, versteht, was ich brauche. Wird gleich erledigt.
  Ergebnis:2 x QR Code. Der Dateinam sagt "Label", aber drin ist ein QR Code. So langsam habe ich deren System in Verdacht, die Mitarbeiter können vielleicht gar nichts dafür.
  

Offensichtlich ist die Bershka-Zentrale an Kommunikation nicht interessiert.

Ich nun auch nicht mehr an Einkäufen bei Bershka. Und wenn mich jemand fragen sollte, werde ich meiner Meinung zu diesem "bershkissenen" Service deutlich Ausdruck verleihen.

Die Retoure habe ich trotzdem geschafft, nach "nur" zwei Wochen Ärger. Hier die Möglichkeiten:

• Man kann den QR Code selbst scannen (es ist ein einfacher Text) und die Adresse daraus verwenden. Wie vermutet ist es nicht die Adresse der Zentrale. Frankieren muss man dann zwar selbst, aber das Ding ist endlich weg.
• Wenn man Glück hat, kann man einen DHL Boten "abfangen", und wenn man noch mehr Glück hat, dann ist dieser so freundlich wie meiner: Code gescannt, Paket mitgenommen. DANKE!!!
  

Bershka kommt mir nicht mehr ins Haus. Good riddance! 

P.S.: Mancher wird sich nun fragen, warum geht der *** statt zu meckern nicht einfach zu einer anderen Post, die einen Scanner hat? Guter Punkt. Aus persönlichen Gründen, auf die ich hier nicht weiter eingehe, liegen andere Poststellen leider außerhalb meiner Reichweite.
